Description of Event: C.R.A.F.T. Cultura is excited to bring San Antonio our first event of 2026, FREEdom Writing. Freedom Writing is a community writing gathering held at Basila Frocks that offers dedicated, focused time to write in a supportive, shared space. Participants are encouraged to explore thoughts, feelings, and ideas through free writing while being in community with others. The session will be facilitated by Dr. Marco Cervantes, also known as hip hop artist Mexstep, who will share writing strategies and creative processes, and reflect on the importance of writing during times of social injustice.

Attendees are welcome to share their writing if they feel comfortable, but there is no pressure to do so. Participants may also choose to write quietly and keep their work private. The goal of Freedom Writing is to create a collective, welcoming space that motivates creative expression, reflection, and connection through writing.

Dr. Marco Cervantes is an Associate Professor in the Mexican American Studies (MAS) Program at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). His research explores themes of Black and Brown solidarity and the role of music and performance in resistance movements. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Cervantes is a performing artist known as Mexstep and a founding member of the critically acclaimed hip-hop group Third Root.
